Man Charged With City Centre Lane-way Rape
A man in his 30s has appeared in court charged with raping a young woman in Dublin city centre. It’s alleged to have happened at Parnell Place in the early hours of Monday.
Garda Lesley O’Rourke said the accused, a Romanian man in his 30s, was charged last night with rape and sexual assault.
He objected to bail on a number of grounds including the seriousness of the charges, the nature of the evidence and the likely sentence if convicted. He said CCTV footage showing the alleged attack had been harvested from four different locations.
Garda O’Rourke told the court the alleged incident was also captured by a witness on a mobile phone. When his colleagues arrived on the scene at 3.50am, he said it would be alleged the man was on top of the woman with his pants down.
He said it would also be alleged he was told to stop three times but refused and had to be physically separated from her. He finished by saying it was his belief, the accused was caught red-handed by his two colleagues.
The man was refused bail and remanded in custody until next week.
