Courts Service Warns Of Fake Jury Duty Email
The Courts Service has issued a warning about bogus emails asking people to pay fines for missing jury duty.
The messages claim that the recipient has not answered a jury summon, with lines like "Making or causing to be made on behalf of a person summoned as a juror any false representation to enable him or her to evade jury service."
"Changes to legislation, introduced in 2008, increased the fine for failing to comply with a jury summons to €500."
The Courts Service says these emails were not sent by them, or from their IT system.
A statement warns that replying to the email "causes a second one to be forwarded seeking banking details for payment of a fine."
"Providing such information is a recipe for fraud, and has been reported to an Garda Síochana. We would never communicate in this manner - nor seek banking details vis an e-mail", the courts warn.
The spam email has been reported to An Garda Siochana, as the messages could lead to fraud as responding to the email leads to a request for bank details to be provided.
