New Seafarers Centre Opens In Dublin Port
Lord Mayor Críona Ní Dhálaigh has officially opened a new Seafarers' Centre at Dublin Port today.
It will cater for the more than 7,500 seafarers that arrive at the Port every year.
An investment of over €500,000 from the Dublin Port Company was spent on kitting out the new centre, with an extra €55,000 coming from the International Transport Workers' Union.
The centre features cooking facilities, relaxation and recreation spaces including pool tables, a library, and free wi-fi.
The Lord Mayor said the centre will be a "welcoming facility for the thousands of seafarers who visit our shores and make a valuable contribution to our city and society".
The centre is located in the former canteen of the iconic Odlums mill on Alexandra Road which closed in 2012. Many features of the old canteen including decking and wooden beams have been preserved for the new centre.
