Report Favours Single Directly-Elected Mayor For All Of Dublin
An official report strongly favours a directly elected mayor for all of Dublin.
The new report, which has been looking at the experience of directly elected mayors in other countries, is due to be finalised for the government this week.
According to the Irish Times it favours one mayor for all of Dublin rather than having one in each of the four local authorities.
Senator Kevin Humphreys believes a directly-elected mayor "could focus on the main problems Dubliners are facing at the moment such as a lack of affordable housing and a lack of proper transport infrastructure".
“Last year, I commissioned an opinion poll by Ireland Thinks, which showed that 75% of Dubliners would welcome a directly-elected mayor", he said.
There are plans for councillors to be balloted next October, on whether to allow Dubliners to choose their mayor and give them executive powers.
Previously the idea was dropped after councillors in Fingal blocked a plan to hold a vote in 2014.
