Drinks Like Guinness To Get Information Labels
The company which owns brands like Guinness and Smirnoff is introducing new labels. Diageo says they'll give information like the calorie count and alcohol content.
Smithwicks will be the first brand in the Irish market to display the new labels, which outline calorie content, grams of alcohol per serving, warnings on drink-driving and alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Liam Reid from Diageo said the labels will help consumers make informed choices "they want information in a way that they can digest and in a way that is useful to them... it provides information in a way that people can actually understand".
Alcohol Action Ireland has welcomed Diageo's move, admitting that "the way we sell and promote alcohol currently does not reflect the risks attached with it and the harm it causes in Irish society, including three deaths every day."
Conor Cullen, Head of Advocacy and Communications with the group, added that "as well as warning of the risks associated with alcohol consumption, health labelling is also important for those people who wish to track their alcohol intake".
