Dublin 1-7
Wexford 0-13
There was heartbreak for Shane O’Brien’s Dublin camogie team as they were beaten in Monday’s Liberty Insurance Camogie Championship quarter-final.
Playing less than 48 hours after the win over Clare in the controversial coin toss play-off Dublin produced a spirited performance and stayed within touching distance of Wexford throughout.
The fresh feet in the purple and gold gave them a clear advantage as they capitalised on some tiredness in the Dubs defence.
Wexford settled quickly and hit the first 3 points; Dublin battled fatigue and the elements as the blustery conditions at Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow made life hard for both sides.
Frees from Alison Maguire kept the Dubs in the contest, she was flawless in front of the posts. The girls in blue had a goal disallowed that would’ve reduced the gap in the first half, the ref adjudged it to be a square ball.
The Dubs went into the half-time break trailing by 0-7 to 0-3. Wexford were quick out of the blocks after the restart and hit two unanswered points to extend their lead.
Louise O’Hara scored the crucial goal against Clare as the girls in blue emerged from the play-off with a win; she did the same again today hitting the back of the net on 56 mins to reduce the deficit to a point. Dublin 1-7 Wexford 0-11.
Wexford dug deep and as the game went into injury time they added a further two points to win the game and cement their place in the semi-final as Dublin’s brave fight back came to an end.
The Dub’s topsy-turvy season ended in disappointment, but on the pitch there were many positives to take from the game.
There was no shortage of effort on display but in the end two championship wins against quality sides in as many days proved a bridge too far for Shane O'Brien's Dublin team.
