David Mahon Found Guilty Of Stepson's Manslaughter
David Mahon has been found guilty of killing his stepson Dean Fitzpatrick.
The 45 year old of Ongar Village was charged with murder but was convicted by, majority verdict, of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Three years ago the 45 year old lived at an apartment at Northern Cross on the Malahide Road and one night he asked Dean, who was Audrey’s son, to call over and speak to him about a water bottle he believed Dean had stolen from his bike.
A row broke out and Dean was stabbed once and died from his injuries.
The Prosecution said it was deliberate – they claim Mahon was drunk and angry and stabbed his stepson on purpose.
But David Mahon said it was an accident and Dean walked onto the knife.
He even suggested Dean did it because he wanted to as he had self-harmed before.
In the end after 8 hours and 16 minutes of deliberations, the jury found David Mahon NOT guilty of Dean’s murder but guilty of manslaughter.
The 45 year gave little reaction to the verdict - he looked over at Audrey who wiped a tear from her eye.
Audrey’s son Dean was 23 years old when he died and was a dad of one – his sister Amy has been missing since 2008 after disappearing while in Spain.
The Judge remanded David Mahon in custody and he will be sentenced at the end of the month.
