President Congratulates Irish Team On "Extraordinary" Win Against New Zealand
President Higgins has led congratulations to the Irish rugby team after their historic win over New Zealand last night.
The 16-9 win at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin was the first time the All Blacks have been defeated by Ireland on home soil.
The New Zealand team was also kept try-less in a game against a Northern Hemisphere side for the first time since 1995.
Michael D Higgins has written to the IRFU and Irish captain Rory Best "to congratulate the team on an extraordinary achievement and to thank the players and coaches for an evening that will live long in the memory of everyone who loves Irish sport".
Meanwhile the Sports Minister has congratulated the team on their historic achievement.
Shane Ross said that he was "delighted" to see the team come out on top, and that the victory was a "monumental triumph."
