St. Vincent's Board To Review Status Of Maternity Hospital
The Board of St Vincent's Healthcare Group has said it will review the status of the new National Maternity Hospital.
It follows a week of public anger at the news that a group of nuns own the land it'll be built on.
In a statement, the hospital group's Chairperson said a review will take place "in view of the controversy and misinformation".
Jimmy Menton said the agreement "was publicly endorsed and welcomed" last year, but that the board of St. Vincent's Healthcare Group "will review the status of the project in light of the current situation."
The Sisters of Charity still owe millions in compensation to victims of abuse from the Catholic Church. Earlier this week hundreds of people gathered for a protest outside the Department of Health against allowing them own the new hospital.
An Uplift petition to block the nuns from owning the new National Maternity Hospital has so far gathered almost 80,000 signatures.
The Health Minister, Simon Harris, says while the nuns will own the hospital there will be no religious interference in medical decisions.
