Bus Eireann Staff Picketing Depots Nationwide
Bus Eireann workers are out in force on picket lines across the country today.
The industrial action is because of a row over cost-cutting plans which would include pay cuts. Union members say they haven't given the company a mandate to make the changes and they will not accept them if they're "forced upon them" by management.
But the bus operator says pay cuts are necessary as the company is facing bankruptcy in the near future unless it brings down its running costs.
Online, views on the strike have been mixed:
Yesterday saw train services disrupted too, as strikes were staged at depots which house both companies and train drivers refused to pass the picket. Irish rail says its services are back to normal today and it's not anticipating any further disruptions this weekend.
Thousands of bus-users have been forced to make alternative travel arrangements, especially students going home for the weekend. Annie Hoey, President of the Union of Students in Ireland it's unfair on young people.
"Students rely on buses to get home, to work, back to college on a Sunday night," she said. "They're being very resourceful, car pooling and being creative on how they get to and from college but it is definitely having an impact on them."
