Keeping Open Border With Ireland Brexit 'Priority' For May
Theresa May has been laying out her 12 point Brexit wishlist. The British Prime Minister is adamant she wants to keep borders with Ireland open when Britain leaves the EU.
She has described the UK's only land-border with Europe as 'an important priority'. "There has been a common travel area between the UK and the Republic of Ireland for many years. Indeed it was formed before either of our two countries were members of the European Union".
"The family ties and bonds of affection that unite our two countries mean that there will always be a special relationship between us", she said.
Theresa May pledged to work "to deliver a practical solution" that will keep the "common travel area with the Republic".
The British Prime Minister has also confirmed that she wants the country to pull out of the European single market as a result of Brexit.
Theresa May's speech means Ireland faces the prospect of losing free trade with its biggest commercial partner.
