City Council Reveals Plan To Fully Pedestrianise College Green
Cars will be completely banned from College Green under new plaza plans from Dublin City Council.
It has proposed a new design which will see the area fully pedestrianised with bicycles being the only thing on wheels allowed in the area.
This plaza was going to be in front of the Bank of Ireland which would have blocked off that area to traffic. However, cars and buses would still have been able to turn right from D’Olier Street and up Dame Street.
Councillors weren’t happy with a number of aspects of the plans and it went back to the drawing board. They were presented with the redesign today, which shows the whole area pedestrianised, making it car and bus free.
The new proposals will go out to public viewing in March but it will be the end of the year before planning is sought and 2017 before any work starts.
Brendan O’Brien from Dublin City Council said "What we are proposing here is that there will be no through traffic. The only vehicles that will be allowed through are bikes".
"Cyclists won't have to dismount", he added.
