Three Dublin Hospitals Will Stop Providing Trauma Care
Three Dublin hospitals could stop providing trauma care.
The plan is part of a new centralisation strategy that Minister for Health Simon Harris hopes will save dozens of lives and reduce the numbers in emergency departments.
The Sunday Business Post reports that three Dublin and a number of regional hospitals will stop taking trauma patients.
If the new measures are implemented, it would mean patients who have been in car crashes or had serious injuries, broken limbs and major wounds will be no longer be treated at some hospitals.
At present, six hospitals in the city including the Mater Hospital, Connolly Hospital, St Vincents, St James, Beaumont and Tallaght all provide trauma services.
However a new report now recommends cutting that number in half and creating two major trauma units - one in Dublin and another based in Cork. They'll then be supported by a network of local trauma units.
A proposal will be brought to cabinet over the coming weeks.
