Prisoner Given Interest Free Loan To Buy A Dog
Prisoners have been given almost half a million euro in interest-free loans over the past three years.
Inmates in Irish prisons have been loaned the money for things like buying Playstations, stereos and to cater for communions and confirmations.
One woman at the Dóchas Centre at Mountjoy borrowed €300 to buy a dog, according to Freedom of Information documents given to the Irish Examiner.
The interest-free loans are repaid by deducting an amount from prisoners' weekly pocket money, and the Prisons Service says most are repaid in full unless a prisoner is released early.
