Crane Operators Begin Rolling Work Stoppages
Dublin's skyline may look a little more still over the next while. Crane operators have brought two major construction sites to a standstill in the capital this morning.
UNITE says they've launched strike action in a bid to secure pay rises. Today's action at SISK on Capital Docks is the first in a series of rolling strike days.
Some other cranes working in the area who are not involved in the strike but are a member of UNITE trade union have stopped work for 30 minutes to show their support.
A regional organiser with the union, Rob Kelly, says the whole country will take action if employers don't "come to their sense".
"If the employers don't want to sit down and negotiate then this is just going to escalate, there is going to be stoppages at all sites around the country".
"Irish construction workers have seen massive problems over the last 10 years and that's been exasperated this week by the employers going down to the labour court looking to register a new employment order which has further cuts of up to 30% for Irish construction workers".
"We're having a ballet tomorrow, the ballet is to extend the industrial action against all CIF companies".
