New Cycle Lane Idea Proposed For Dublin City
City council engineers plan to meet with the National Transport Authority about new cycle lanes.
The proposed Parking Protected cycle lane would link streets between Fitzwilliam Square and Trinity College.
It would involves moving the bike lane to between the footpath and parking bays, so that parked cars would protect cyclists from the moving traffic. The move would mean 139 fewer parking spaces in the area but the city council is still keen on the proposal.
"What was one of the best examples of Georgian street architecture, we've turned into an underused overflow car park for the city centre", says Councillor Paddy Smyth, who put forward the idea.
"This could be changed into a safe, welcoming street scape and transport link".
Dublin City Council plan to bring the proposal to the National Transport Authority to seek funding for the project.
Yesterday, up to 15 cycling advocates lined up along a bike lane on Andrew's Street yesterday, to prevent cars parking there.
They wanted to highlight how the illegal practice puts their lives at risk by forcing them out into the main traffic.

It comes as the Road Safety Authority releases a new awareness video.
It encourages drivers to leave a safe distance of one and a half metres when overtaking cyclists.
