Poolbeg Social Housing Quota Increased
Dublin City Council has agreed to include 550 extra social housing units on the new Poolbeg West site.
The 34-hectare site in Dublin 4 includes the old Irish Glass Bottle premises.
Under usual rules 10 percent of of the three-and-half-thousand homes to be built on the site must be social housing.
However last night the Council managed to increase that number.
It means that more than a quarter of the apartments planned for the new 'town' will be used for social and affordable housing.
Councillors had wanted there to be 50% social housing but have broadly welcomed the promise that 900 of the units will come under that banner.
Simon Brook of the Cluid Housing Association says "certainly 50% would have made a bigger drop in the ocean and would have been preferable. But, we can live with 25%.
The suburb set to be called Poolbeg West will include shops, cafes, a hotel, and supermarkets. A boulevard will link Sean Moore Road down to the canal.
It’s also set to provide 7000 jobs.
The majority of properties in the area are set to be two beds with the remainder made up of studios, one and three bed properties.
Meanwhile plans for Hollywood style film studios on the peninsula aren’t dead in the water.
Councillors have backed a motion endorsing a studio with sounds stages in Dublin Bay.
However Dublin Port Company would have to agree to any plans.
Earlier this week the firm ruled out the idea, saying only one company had submitted the proposal and it hadn't been fleshed out with any detail.
