Black Box Recorder of Rescue 116 Has Been Recovered
The Air Accident Investigation Unit says the black box voice recorder of missing coastguard helicopter Rescue 116 has been found.
Divers had been hopeful they'd reach the wreckage on the seabed today following an improvement in weather conditions.
It's forty metres deep about 10km off the coast of Co. Mayo
The search team's priority is to find the three missing Dublin coastguard crew - Captain Mark Duffy, Winch Operator Paul Ormsby and Winchman Ciarán Smith.
The Department of Transport says the flight recorder is now in the custody of the AAIU and will be taken under escort to Baldonnel Aerodrome.
It will be onward transported to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch in the UK tomorrow, Saturday 25 March for download."
Irish Times reporter Lorna Siggins says the black box is two recorders in one and it "is visually in very good condition. It's to be dried out on the (Naval vessel) Grannuaile" before it's transported to Britain, where the download is expected to take place next week.
