Man Remanded Over False Imprisonment Of Child
A 35-year-old man has been remanded in custody over the false imprisonment of a child in Co. Laois.
Michael Martin, with an address at 3 Shandon Court, Yellow Road, Waterford appeared before Portlaoise District Court this afternoon.
The court heard that when Michael Martin was read the charge of false imprisonment, he denied it, saying 'I did not abduct anyone'.
Mr Martin allegedly pulled up beside children playing on a roadside at Old Town in Cullahill on Wednesday morning in a stolen vehicle and tried to pull a young girl into the jeep.
The child managed to escape with the help of her brother, who jumped onto the moving vehicle.
Judge Catherine Staines refused an application for bail, citing the seriousness of the charge.
Mr Martin was granted free legal aid and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
He was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison, to appear in court again on March 13th.
