Katie Taylor Is Through To Rio Olympics
Katie Taylor will defend her Olympic title at the Rio Games this summer after she defeated Mexican Victoria Torres in the lightweight quarter-finals at the AIBA World Championships in Astana.
There was concern that the Bray woman may not make it to Brazil after her shock defeat to Yana Alexseevna in last month's Olympic qualifiers.
She vowed after that loss to do everything she could to make sure she would defend her Olympic title and she has done that today.
Taylor claimed a convincing unanimous decision victory in her last-eight fight to guarantee herself a bronze medal and also stays on track to win a sixth world title in-a-row.
Taylor's semi-final bout pits her against France's Estelle Mossely, who coincidentally defeated Alexseevna in her quarter-final bout.
Mossely was beaten by Ireland's golden girl following a unanimous decision in the final at the inaugural European Games last year.
Meanwhile, Dublin's Kellie Harrington is also guaranteed at least a bronze medal after she won her quarter-final today but unfortunately she will not be going to Rio as her 64kg weight category is not an Olympic event.
Elsewhere, Offaly's Grainne Walsh misses out on a medal having lost her quarter-final.
