92% Of Rental Homes Are Not Within Rent Assistance Limits
92% of advertised rental homes are too expensive for people on rent supplement and HAP payments, a new survey has warned.
The Simon Communities' latest national survey found just 41 out of 530 properties around the country were affordable for people receiving assistance.
530 properties marks a 54% decrease compared to the same study conducted in May 2015.
In Dublin city centre, only a single property was available within rent assistance limits.
Meanwhile, Galway city centre, Limerick city centre and Portlaoise had no properties on offer within Rent Supplement/Housing Assistance Payment limits.
Niamh Randall, spokesperson for the Simon Communities, observed: "Nearly half a million households rent their home. Without full rent certainty and security of tenure they cannot have peace of mind.
"Rent Pressure Zones must be extended and enforced where they already exist. The Government must increase Rent Supplement and HAP limits to allow single people, couples and families in receipt of these payments to compete fairly."
